Food for Thought

SUPERNATURAL

A young man was sitting on a park bench reading.  An older man, who was a professor of science
at the local college, came by and sat down on the park bench.  He noticed that the young man was
reading a Bible.  Feeling the need to interject himself into the situation he asked the young man,
“Son, what are you reading about?”  The young man said, “I just read about how God opened up
the Red Sea allowing the whole nation of Israel to walk across, right through the middle.”  The enlightened
science professor chuckled and said, "Son that can all be very easily explained by science.
Modern science has shown that the Red Sea at that time in history was probably only 10 inches deep.
So you see, it would have been little or no problem for the Israelites to wade across if they wanted to."
The boy looked a little confused as his eyes glanced back down at the Bible lying open in his lap.
The professor, feeling somewhat smug and satisfied that he had enlightened the naive young man to the
finer points of scientific insight, stood up to walk away.  Just as he was about to leave the young man spoke.
He said "Sir, I want to thank you for that information.  That really makes this story even more special."
"How’s that?” asked the professor.  "Well, a few minutes ago I thought it was some real big miracle that
God split the sea allowing the Israelites to cross and then caused the sea to collapse back in on the
Egyptian army.  But now you tell me that our God was able to drown the whole Egyptian army in just
10 inches of water, now that is what I call a real miracle."

Hebrews 11:6 reminds us that; “without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who
comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

Ever stop and take notice of how many times well-meaning people (even Christians) attempt to rationalize
and even minimize God and his ability to supernaturally move in our lives.  They point out practical,
scientific, historical, and mathematical data or examples of how something real believers see as a
supernatural move of God to be mere coincidence, a freak of nature, or rare phenomena.  What is it
about God, His all powerfulness, His ability to be ever-present, and His knowing of all things that causes
men to search for a logical, rational answer instead of just accepting His ability to be sovereign over all?
The truth...it makes us uncomfortable to admit and know that we are not in control of anything!
We can’t control our daily lives anymore than we can control sunrise and sunsets, or life and death.
That reality makes us very uncomfortable and it exposes every person’s real need for Jesus.

You see, in the end it is really all about faith.  To be a follower of God requires, no, it demands faith.
We must believe in Him, in His son Jesus, and in His Word.  So, today as you make your way a little further
downs life’s path, I hope that you are found expressing a deep faith in your God.  You’ll never be sorry that
you did.  And who knows what rewards for such a faith may be coming your way, even as we speak.

Dare to Believe…believe that the same God who formed heaven and earth, collapsed the walls of
Jericho, parted the waters of the Jordan, and drowned the entire Egyptian army in 10 inches of water
is able to do abundantly more than we can ask or imagine. (Ephesians. 3:20)
